“Supernatural”: The hug between the Winchesters in last week’s episode marked a turning point for them — and a return to the sort of solid bond they haven’t had in a few seasons. “Given how the boys reunited at the beginning of this season, not on the best terms, the one thing that did unite them was this sense of revenge against Crowley and the demons,” says executive producer Jeremy Carver. “Now, we’re going to see things start moving pretty quickly and pretty wildly. A lot of balls in the air. The boys are really going to be constantly confronted with the idea of, ‘Okay, we want revenge, but how far are we willing to go? How much are we willing to sacrifice?'” It’s a theme that drove them when “Supernatural” began, and we’ll find them looking at the question in a new light toward the finale.

Right now, the Winchesters’ No. 1 priority is closing the gates of hell to keep all the demons out. What they don’t know yet, though, is that in addition to the demon tablet, there’s an angel tablet, which could lock all the angels away for good. The question is, would they be willing to banish Castiel in order to rid the world of all the other angels? “I absolutely think the boys would sacrifice Castiel to get rid of the angels,” Jared Padalecki tells us. “I think they are, not one-track minded, but goal-oriented enough to where you’ve seen them sacrifice themselves or others to try and accomplish a bigger objective … I feel like they would do it. I could be wrong, but I feel like they would do it.”

In this week’s episode, Sam and Dean learn that in order to rid the world of demons forever, one of them will have to complete several trials from God, starting with killing a hell hound. Yes — only one of them can complete the trials, and the one that does is in for a world of suffering. When we stopped by the set this week, Jared Padalecki told us that the chosen Winchester will begin to experience nosebleeds and symptoms similar to Tuberculosis… and, as is the Winchester way, he’ll try to keep it from his brother. “Try” being the operative word.

“Supernatural’s” mid-season finales like to leave us with plenty of anxiety to enjoy over the holidays. (Remember the year that Dean was about to tell Sam what John whispered to him on his deathbed, and then the end credits rolled? That was not a merry Christmas in our house.) The final episode of 2012 is no exception; fans can expect the episode to end on a nail-biting cliffhanger for the brothers Winchester. The episode kicks off with Sam and Dean headed to Louisiana to investigate vampire killings, which Sam believes are linked to Benny. Suffice to say that Dean isn’t particularly thrilled to learn that Sam asked their old hunter friend Martin Creaser to track Benny. Yes, the same Martin who we last saw in a mental institution back in Season 5, after hunting became too much for him to bear. In fact, Martin’s history of crazy is exactly what made him the man for the job, according to executive producer Jeremy Carver. “He was something of a really great character. We really loved him, and you’ve got certain points in this episode where the quote-unquote ‘crazy guy’ might be the sanest guy in the room,” Carver tells us. “He’s dropped into a situation where you’ve got the Winchester brothers literally arguing about how they’re going to essentially deal with monsters in a way that he’s never heard hunters discuss monsters before. The idea of Dean having a relationship with this thing is so far from Martin’s understanding. In a weird way the guy who has had [mental] issues in the past lends a bit of balance to the episode, and, frankly, an element of unpredictability as well.”Martin becomes convinced that Benny is responsible for the bodies that have been piling up in his Louisiana hometown, where Benny has landed a job at a diner. Sam’s feelings about Benny are pretty clear — but Dean asks the other hunters to hold off on taking action until he can check in on his friend.

Zap2it was on set during filming of this episode, so we can reveal that Martin learns that Benny has returned to his hometown and is working at a diner under an assumed name. It’s not long before — surprise, surprise — people start turning up dead from… er… animal attacks.

We’ve heard that one before.

Martin is sure that Benny is behind the killings, and when he confronts the Winchesters, Dean is furious with Sam for going behind his back. Sam does his best to give Dean the benefit of the doubt, though, and despite Martin’s protests, he agrees to give Dean some extra time to find out if Benny is guilty… and how to handle it.

The episode also features Kathleen Munroe, of “Haven,” “Alphas,” and “CSI: NY” as Elizabeth, a local who works with Benny. It’s about time Dean got his flirt on again.

“Supernatural”: Women don’t tend to stick around long on this show, so our ears perked up when a little birdie told us that we’ll soon see a “major recurring female character.” Naomi will debut in Episode 807, “A Little Slice of Kevin.”. She’s very buttoned up and polished (and described as similar to Matt Damon’s character in “The Good Shepherd”). All that poise and professionalism is just a farce, though — she’s got some serious issues. Oh, and FYI, that episode’s mystery-of-the-week centers around a woman named Delta, who is a rocker who may have become a “witch-for-hire” when her band broke up.

“Supernatural”: Good news, Castiel fans! Misha Collins will be in a minimum of 8 episodes of “Supernatural” this season. The not-so-good news? Given the flashback-heavy season, Collins can’t confirm whether or not Castiel actually makes it out of Purgatory. Thus far, he hasn’t shot (or read!) any scenes that aren’t flashbacks of Purgatory.
